PetroChina’s 2007 Shanghai listing briefly made it the world’s largest company by market capitalization.
PetroChina shares began trading in Shanghai in November 2007, and their initial surge briefly pushed the company’s market value above $1 trillion. That made it the largest publicly traded company in the world at that moment, ahead of established giants such as ExxonMobil.
The valuation proved short-lived. PetroChina’s share price later declined sharply, illustrating why market-capitalization rankings are snapshots rather than permanent measures of corporate importance. The company remained one of China’s major energy firms, but its brief peak is remembered as one of the most dramatic valuation episodes in stock-market history.
PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, a state-owned energy group. It should not be confused with Sinopec, another large Chinese petroleum company, or with Saudi Aramco, whose later IPO produced a different market-cap record.
