Microsoft was the first U.S. company other than Apple to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization.
Microsoft passed $2 trillion during trading on June 24, 2021. Its valuation was supported by cloud-computing growth, especially Azure, alongside enterprise software such as Windows, Office, and the company’s business subscriptions.
Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company became famous for operating systems and productivity software, then broadened its business through cloud services, enterprise tools, gaming, and professional networking through LinkedIn.
Apple had reached $2 trillion in 2020, so Microsoft’s milestone made it the second U.S. company to cross that level. Market-cap rankings can change as share prices move, even when a company’s underlying operations have not changed that day.
