Saudi Aramco was the first company to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization through an initial public offering.
Saudi Aramco listed shares on the Saudi Stock Exchange in December 2019. At the IPO price, the company was valued at approximately $1.7 trillion, making it the largest initial public offering by company valuation and one of the largest equity offerings ever completed.
The listing involved only a small portion of the company’s total shares, while the Saudi government retained the overwhelming majority. The IPO was intended to raise funds and support Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification plans under Vision 2030.
Saudi Aramco’s offering is sometimes compared with technology companies that reached trillion-dollar valuations through years of public trading. The distinction matters: an IPO valuation is established when shares first list, while later market-cap records result from movements in a company’s publicly traded stock.
