Tesla was the first automobile manufacturer to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Tesla crossed the $1 trillion level in October 2021 after its share price surged following a major vehicle-order announcement. The milestone made Tesla the first automaker valued above that threshold on the public stock market, far exceeding the market values of established mass-market manufacturers at the time.
Tesla’s valuation reflected expectations about electric-vehicle growth, battery technology, software, charging infrastructure, and possible future businesses such as autonomous driving. Market capitalization measures investor expectations as well as current earnings, so it can differ greatly from production volume or revenue.
Tesla’s milestone is sometimes compared directly with rankings based on annual vehicle sales. Those are different measures: Toyota and Volkswagen have often produced more vehicles, while Tesla achieved the higher market valuation because investors assigned greater future-growth potential to its business.
