Saudi Aramco was the first company outside the technology sector to reach approximately a US$2 trillion market valuation.
Saudi Aramco reached the level in December 2019, soon after its shares began trading on the Saudi Stock Exchange. The company’s enormous oil reserves, high production capacity, and central role in global energy markets supported a valuation that rivaled the largest technology corporations.
Saudi Aramco’s business is broader than crude-oil extraction. It includes natural gas, refining, petrochemicals, shipping, and distribution. Nevertheless, oil production and petroleum prices remain crucial to its earnings and investor perception.
The wording matters because market capitalization can be measured at different moments. Saudi Aramco’s IPO valuation was about US$1.7 trillion, and its shares then rose to approximately US$2 trillion. Technology companies later dominated many global market-cap rankings, but the energy giant demonstrated that commodity producers could still reach the highest tier.
