Apple was the first company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization based on intraday trading in January 2022.
Apple briefly crossed the $3 trillion threshold during trading on January 3, 2022, when its share price reached the level needed for that valuation. The company became the first to hit the mark during a trading session, although its value later moved below it before the market closed.
This distinction matters because market capitalization changes continuously while exchanges are open. A company can pass a round-number threshold intraday and finish the day below it. Later, Apple reached a $3 trillion valuation on a closing basis in 2023, making the milestone more durable.
Apple’s value was supported by the scale of the iPhone business, growth in services such as the App Store and cloud services, and investor confidence in its ecosystem. The milestone did not mean Apple had $3 trillion in cash or sales.
