Apple was the first company to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization during regular U.S. stock trading.
The milestone occurred on August 19, 2020, when Apple’s share price rose high enough to value its outstanding shares at approximately $2 trillion. The achievement came about two years after Apple became the first U.S. public company valued at $1 trillion.
Apple’s valuation reflected investor expectations about its hardware, software, services, and ecosystem businesses. The company earns money from devices such as the iPhone and Mac, as well as services including the App Store, iCloud, and Apple Music. Stock splits change the quoted share price but do not by themselves change market capitalization.
Saudi Aramco reached a $2 trillion valuation briefly in 2019 based on its opening share price, but that was not the first regular-session U.S. trading achievement. Microsoft later became the first company to close above a $2 trillion market value, while Apple had already crossed the threshold intraday.
