Apple was the first company to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization based on a U.S. stock exchange listing.
Apple passed the $2 trillion mark during trading on August 19, 2020, on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The company’s shares had risen sharply from the beginning of that year, reflecting strong investor demand for major technology businesses and confidence in Apple’s product and services ecosystem.
Saudi Aramco had reached an approximate $2 trillion valuation in 2019, but it trades on Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul exchange. Apple’s milestone is therefore often described as the first $2 trillion valuation for a U.S.-listed company.
Market capitalization is not identical to enterprise value, which also accounts for debt and cash. It is simply the market price of equity multiplied by shares outstanding. That distinction explains why different financial rankings can use different valuation measures.
