Microsoft was the first company to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization after Apple.
Microsoft crossed the $2 trillion threshold in June 2021, during a period when investors strongly valued its cloud, software, and enterprise businesses. The company had transformed significantly since its earlier identity as a personal-computer software specialist.
Azure cloud computing, Office 365 subscriptions, Windows, LinkedIn, and the company’s gaming operations all contributed to its diversified business. Microsoft’s recurring software revenue and enterprise contracts helped make its earnings more predictable than those of many traditional hardware companies.
Market capitalization reflects investors’ expectations as well as current profits. It can therefore rise before future growth appears in reported revenue. Microsoft’s valuation milestone was based on its listed common shares and was separate from measures such as total assets, sales, or brand value.
