Alphabet became a trillion-dollar company in 2020.
Alphabet Inc. is the parent company created by Google’s 2015 corporate reorganization. Google remains Alphabet’s largest business, while the parent structure also houses activities such as autonomous-vehicle company Waymo and life-sciences businesses associated with Verily.
Alphabet’s market capitalization passed $1 trillion in January 2020. The milestone reflected the scale of Google’s advertising operations, especially Search and YouTube, as well as investor interest in cloud computing and the company’s longer-term technology projects.
Alphabet is often confused with Google because Google is the dominant operating company inside the group. However, Alphabet is the publicly traded parent whose shares represent ownership in the wider collection of businesses. Market-cap rankings usually list Alphabet under its corporate name, not simply under Google.
