Microsoft was the first software company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Microsoft crossed the trillion-dollar mark in April 2019. Although Apple had reached $1 trillion earlier, Microsoft became the first company primarily identified with software to achieve the milestone. Its valuation reflected the strength of cloud computing, enterprise software, Windows, Office, gaming, and recurring subscription revenue.
The company’s transition under CEO Satya Nadella toward cloud services was especially important. Azure became a major growth engine, while Microsoft 365 converted familiar productivity software into subscription products. LinkedIn and Xbox also broadened Microsoft’s business beyond traditional PC software.
Classification can vary because large technology companies operate in many sectors. Microsoft sells hardware and services, but software and cloud computing remain central to its identity. The market-cap figure is also time-specific: share prices rise and fall, so later companies may pass the same threshold without changing Microsoft’s historical first.
