Which company was the first to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in the Middle East after its 2019 stock-market listing?

The story behind the answer

Saudi Aramco was the first company in the Middle East to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization after its 2019 stock-market listing.

Saudi Aramco began trading publicly on the Tadawul exchange in December 2019. Its share price rose sharply during the first sessions, taking the company above a $1 trillion valuation and making it one of the world’s most valuable listed companies. It later approached the $2 trillion level.

The company is formally Saudi Arabian Oil Company and remains majority-owned by the Saudi government. Its enormous valuation reflects its oil reserves, production scale, profitability, and strategic importance to Saudi Arabia. The IPO was also a major part of the country’s effort to diversify its economy under Vision 2030.

Saudi Aramco’s listing is distinct from the many large private or state-owned energy companies in the region. A market-cap milestone requires publicly traded shares and a market price, so private-company valuations are not directly equivalent.
