Apple was the first computer-technology company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization in 2018.
Although Apple is widely identified with phones and consumer electronics, its business grew from personal computers and software. The Macintosh established Apple as a major technology brand, while the iPod, iPhone, and iPad expanded it into music, communications, and mobile computing.
The $1 trillion valuation reflected the market’s estimate of the value of all outstanding Apple shares. It did not mean that Apple had $1 trillion in cash, nor that the company had sold $1 trillion worth of products. Market capitalization is a stock-market measurement that changes whenever the share price changes.
Apple’s achievement helped establish trillion-dollar companies as a familiar feature of global markets. Later, several technology and energy companies joined that group, but Apple’s 2018 milestone came first among the modern companies most commonly cited.
