Apple was the first publicly traded company to reach a $3 trillion market capitalization at any point.
Apple first touched the $3 trillion valuation during intraday trading on January 3, 2022. Its share price reached the level before retreating, making the event an intraday milestone rather than a full-session closing record.
The company’s market value reflected the continuing strength of the iPhone ecosystem, services revenue, wearable devices, and investor confidence in Apple’s ability to generate large cash flows. Apple had already established earlier milestones by reaching $1 trillion in 2018 and $2 trillion in 2020.
Microsoft later became the first company to trade above $3 trillion in January 2024, creating a commonly confused comparison. Apple’s earlier achievement and Microsoft’s later milestone are both correct because market capitalization can briefly cross a threshold during a trading session and later close below it.
