Amazon was the first company to lose $1 trillion in market capitalization during a single year, reaching that milestone in November 2022.
Amazon’s shares declined as investors reassessed high-growth technology companies amid rising interest rates, inflation, weaker economic expectations, and concerns about slowing online retail growth. The company’s market value had previously benefited from years of rapid expansion in e-commerce and cloud computing.
The loss was measured from Amazon’s peak market capitalization to its value during the 2022 decline. It did not mean Amazon paid out or physically destroyed $1 trillion in cash. Market capitalization is an estimate based on the latest trading price multiplied by shares outstanding.
Amazon remained a major company because its businesses continued to include online retail, Amazon Web Services, advertising, logistics, and digital media. A falling valuation and falling revenue are different measurements.
