Amazon was the first company to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization using a share price above $1,000 in 2018.
Amazon passed the $1 trillion market-capitalization mark on September 4, 2018, about one month after Apple reached the same broad valuation milestone. At the time, Amazon’s shares traded above $2,000 rather than near $1,000; the company’s total value depended on both that share price and its number of shares outstanding.
Amazon’s growth came from its online retail marketplace, logistics network, subscription products, cloud-computing division, and advertising business. Amazon Web Services became a particularly important source of operating profit.
This record is sometimes misstated as Amazon being the first company to reach $1 trillion. Apple achieved that earlier, on August 2, 2018. Amazon was the second U.S. company to pass the threshold and the first to do so with its distinctive high nominal share price.
