Apple was the first company to close a trading day above a $3 trillion market capitalization.
Apple reached the milestone on January 3, 2022, when its shares closed at a level that valued the company above $3 trillion. It had briefly touched that level during intraday trading in 2021 but did not finish that session above it.
A company’s market capitalization is calculated by multiplying its share price by the number of shares outstanding. Because prices move throughout each trading session, analysts distinguish between briefly touching a valuation and closing above it.
Apple’s achievement followed its earlier records as the first company to reach $1 trillion and $2 trillion market values. Microsoft later became the second company to close above $3 trillion, while other major technology companies continued competing for the top position.
