Apple was the first company to close a stock-market session above a $1 trillion valuation.
Apple finished trading above the $1 trillion market-cap level on August 2, 2018. The distinction matters because a company can briefly cross a valuation during the day and then fall back below it before the closing bell. Apple’s closing milestone followed strong quarterly results and investor confidence in the iPhone ecosystem and services business.
The $1 trillion figure was an estimate based on Apple’s closing share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. It did not mean Apple had $1 trillion in cash or that the company had sold $1 trillion of products. Market capitalization represents the value investors assign to the company’s equity.
Apple’s achievement came after decades of product development, including the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet later joined the group, but Apple set the first closing record.
