Amazon was the first technology business to lose more than $1 trillion in market value from its peak.
Amazon crossed the $1 trillion loss milestone in November 2022 after its share price fell sharply from its 2021 peak. The decline reflected broad technology-stock selling, rising interest rates, slower growth expectations, and concerns about consumer spending and the company’s costs.
Amazon had become one of the world’s most valuable companies through its online retail business, Amazon Web Services, advertising operations, and subscription services. Its valuation had risen dramatically during the pandemic as online shopping and cloud demand expanded.
A loss of $1 trillion in market value does not mean Amazon paid out or spent $1 trillion. It means the quoted value of its publicly traded shares fell by that amount relative to its peak. The figure is therefore a change in valuation rather than an accounting loss of cash.
