Facebook was the first publicly traded social-media company to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Facebook crossed the $1 trillion mark on June 28, 2021, after a favorable ruling in a major U.S. antitrust case helped lift its share price. The company’s market value had grown through the global scale of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, as well as its digital advertising business.
Facebook went public in 2012 under the ticker FB. Its advertising model used large audiences and data-driven targeting to attract businesses, making advertising the company’s dominant source of revenue for many years.
In October 2021, Facebook announced that its corporate name would change to Meta Platforms. The rebranding did not erase the earlier market-cap milestone: the company that reached $1 trillion in June was still the same publicly traded corporation, later known as Meta.
