Saudi Aramco was the first publicly traded company outside the technology sector to reach a market capitalization of about $2 trillion.
The oil producer reached that approximate valuation shortly after its December 2019 listing in Riyadh. Its market value rose rapidly as the newly listed shares gained the maximum permitted amount during the first trading sessions. Saudi Aramco’s enormous production base and ownership of some of the world’s largest oil reserves made the listing unusually significant.
Technology companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet had driven many of the largest market-cap records before and after the IPO. Saudi Aramco showed that an energy company could still join the very top tier of global equity valuations, especially when it combined exceptional scale with the strategic importance of petroleum.
The company’s market cap has not remained fixed at $2 trillion. Oil prices, production expectations, dividends, interest rates, geopolitical developments, and investor sentiment can all affect the value assigned to an energy producer.
