Saudi Aramco was the first publicly traded company in the Middle East to reach a $2 trillion market capitalization.
Saudi Aramco briefly reached the $2 trillion valuation shortly after its shares began trading in December 2019. The event followed the company’s record-setting initial public offering on Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul exchange and made it the first listed Middle Eastern company to reach that level.
The company’s valuation was closely tied to its role as Saudi Arabia’s dominant oil producer and to global expectations about petroleum demand, reserves, and future earnings. Saudi Aramco also owns large refining and petrochemical operations, giving it a broader business than crude production alone.
The $2 trillion figure was a market valuation based on the trading price of publicly listed shares. It did not mean the company had raised $2 trillion in the IPO; only a minority stake was offered to investors, while the Saudi government retained most of the shares.
