Reliance Industries was the first publicly traded company founded in India to exceed a $200 billion market capitalization.
Reliance Industries crossed the $200 billion level in September 2021 as its shares rose on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India. The milestone made it India’s most valuable listed company at the time.
The group began with textiles and petrochemicals and expanded into oil refining, petroleum marketing, telecommunications, retail, and digital services. Its Jio telecom business rapidly increased access to mobile data in India and became a major part of investor interest in the company.
Reliance Industries is distinct from Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and HDFC Bank, which are also major Indian listed companies but operate in different sectors. Market capitalization rankings among Indian companies can shift with share prices and changes in the number of shares outstanding.
