Which company was the first outside the United States to exceed a $2 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

Saudi Aramco was the first company outside the United States to exceed a $2 trillion market capitalization.

Saudi Aramco briefly reached a valuation of about $2 trillion in December 2019, shortly after its shares began trading on the Saudi Stock Exchange. The company’s enormous oil reserves, production capacity, and strategic importance made its listing one of the largest public offerings in financial history.

Its initial public offering took place on the Tadawul exchange in Riyadh. The offering sold only a portion of the company, meaning the market price of the listed shares was used to estimate the value of the entire company. This is how a partial listing can establish a public valuation for a much larger enterprise.

Saudi Aramco’s market value has fluctuated with oil prices, production expectations, interest rates, and investor sentiment. A quoted market cap is therefore a changing market estimate rather than a permanent measurement of physical reserves.
