Tesla was the first automobile manufacturer to exceed a $1 trillion market capitalization.
Tesla crossed the $1 trillion valuation threshold in October 2021 after its share price rose sharply following a major vehicle-order announcement. The event made Tesla the first carmaker to join the group of companies valued above one trillion dollars in public markets.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and became a major force in battery-electric vehicles. Its Model 3 and Model Y helped expand electric cars beyond expensive niche models, while its energy-storage products and charging network supported its broader technology image.
Market capitalization reflects investor expectations as well as current results. Tesla’s valuation therefore incorporated anticipated growth in electric vehicles, software, batteries, and autonomous-driving technology. It should not be confused with the company’s annual automobile sales or production value.
