Which company was the first Asian semiconductor maker to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization?

The story behind the answer

TSMC was the first Asian semiconductor maker to surpass a $1 trillion market capitalization.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company crossed the $1 trillion valuation level in July 2024 as investors responded to the company’s central role in producing advanced chips for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. TSMC’s shares are listed in Taiwan and its American depositary receipts trade in the United States.

TSMC does not generally sell consumer chips under its own brand. Instead, it manufactures semiconductors designed by other companies, including processors and accelerators used in smartphones, servers, and AI systems. This foundry model made the company a critical supplier to much of the global technology industry.

The milestone is distinct from rankings for all Asian companies or all semiconductor companies. Samsung Electronics, for example, is a much broader electronics conglomerate, while TSMC is primarily a dedicated contract chip manufacturer.
