Oracle was founded by Larry Ellison in 1977 as Software Development Laboratories.
Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates established Software Development Laboratories in 1977. The company worked on a relational database project for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, which used the code name “Oracle.” The business later adopted the Oracle name.
Oracle became a major enterprise software company by selling database-management systems. Relational databases organize information into tables and use structured query languages to retrieve and manipulate data. Oracle Database became one of the company’s best-known products.
Oracle’s name is sometimes confused with the database product itself. Oracle Corporation is the company, while Oracle Database is one of its flagship technologies. The company later expanded into applications, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise hardware through acquisitions such as Sun Microsystems.
