Apple surpassed a $3 trillion market capitalization for the first time during intraday trading on January 3, 2022.
The milestone was reached when Apple’s share price briefly climbed high enough for the value of all outstanding shares to exceed $3 trillion. Market capitalization is not the same as cash held by a company or the total value of its physical assets. It is a market-based estimate derived from the stock price and share count.
Apple’s valuation reflected decades of growth from personal computers into smartphones, tablets, wearables, services, and digital distribution. The iPhone remained the company’s largest product category, while recurring services revenue became increasingly important to investors.
Apple’s share price later moved below and above the threshold, illustrating why intraday milestones differ from closing-price records. The company eventually became one of several firms associated with the $3 trillion level, but its January 2022 crossing was the first.
