Meta Platforms suffered the largest one-day market-cap loss, about $232 billion, on February 3, 2022.
Meta’s shares plunged after the company reported disappointing user numbers and warned about competitive and advertising pressures. The decline erased roughly $232 billion from its market capitalization in one trading session, making it one of the most dramatic losses in stock-market history.
Meta was then known to investors as Facebook’s parent company, but it had changed its corporate name from Facebook to Meta Platforms in October 2021. The rebranding emphasized its long-term metaverse strategy, while its main revenue source remained digital advertising across Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms.
The loss was a change in market value, not a direct withdrawal of that amount from the company’s bank account. Market capitalization measures what investors collectively value the outstanding shares at, so a sharp price fall can destroy enormous paper value without an equivalent cash payment.
