Alibaba Group set the previous global IPO record with its approximately $25 billion New York listing in 2014.
Alibaba began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on September 19, 2014. The offering raised about $21.8 billion at first, and an overallotment option later lifted the total to approximately $25 billion.
The Chinese company operates major online-commerce platforms, including Taobao and Tmall, and has also developed businesses in cloud computing, logistics, digital media, and payments through associated structures. Its scale made the listing one of the most watched public offerings in financial history.
Alibaba’s record stood until Saudi Aramco’s 2019 offering exceeded it. IPO size measures money raised by selling shares, while market capitalization measures the total market value of all outstanding shares; the two figures are related but not identical.
