Which company resulted from the 2000 merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham?
Answer
GlaxoSmithKline
Answer
GlaxoSmithKline
GlaxoSmithKline resulted from the 2000 merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham.
The companies announced their combination in January 2000, and the transaction was completed later that year. The new British multinational combined Glaxo Wellcome’s pharmaceutical research and products with SmithKline Beecham’s medicines, vaccines and consumer-health operations.
The merger made GlaxoSmithKline, commonly abbreviated GSK, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Its early portfolio included prescription medicines, vaccines and consumer brands such as Aquafresh and Sensodyne. The company has since reorganized parts of its consumer-health business, including the creation of Haleon in 2022.
The name is sometimes confused with Glaxo, the earlier company that had merged with Wellcome in 1995. That earlier deal created Glaxo Wellcome; the later 2000 transaction with SmithKline Beecham created GlaxoSmithKline.
