Which company produces the 'Barbie' doll?

The story behind the answer

The company that produces the Barbie doll is Mattel.

Barbie was introduced by Mattel on March 9, 1959, after being developed by Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler. Handler reportedly noticed that her daughter preferred playing with paper dolls representing adults, which helped inspire the idea of an adult-shaped fashion doll. Barbie’s full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, named after Handler’s daughter Barbara.

The original Barbie wore a black-and-white striped swimsuit and was marketed at the American International Toy Fair in New York. The doll was influenced in part by the German Bild Lilli doll, which Handler had seen during a trip to Europe. Mattel later expanded Barbie into a broad brand of dolls, clothing, accessories, books, films, television programs, and games.

People sometimes confuse Mattel with Fisher-Price, another Mattel-owned brand, or with Hasbro, a separate toy company. Lego is also unrelated: it makes construction toys rather than producing Barbie.
