Inditex owns Zara and was founded by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera.
Inditex is short for Industria de Diseño Textil. Its best-known brand, Zara, began in A Coruña, Spain, in 1975. Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera built the business around frequent product changes, closely coordinated design and manufacturing, and rapid distribution to stores.
The group was created in 1985 to manage Zara and related activities. It later expanded internationally and added brands including Pull&Bear, Massimo Dutti, Bershka, Stradivarius, Oysho, and Zara Home. Inditex became a major publicly traded fashion company on the Madrid Stock Exchange in 2001.
Inditex is often mistaken for Zara because Zara is its flagship retail brand. The corporate group, however, owns several chains with distinct customer segments. Its model is also commonly called “fast fashion,” though its supply-chain organization and store operations are more specific than that broad label suggests.
