Microsoft became the second U.S. company to reach a $2 trillion market value.
Microsoft crossed the threshold in June 2021, following Apple’s earlier achievement. Investors had rewarded the company’s transformation from a primarily PC-focused software business into a diversified technology group centered on cloud computing, enterprise software, gaming, and subscriptions.
Azure cloud services became especially important to Microsoft’s growth story, while products such as Microsoft 365 produced recurring revenue. The company also owns the Xbox business and LinkedIn. These operations help explain why Microsoft’s market capitalization is much broader than the value of Windows alone.
Market-cap milestones depend on the share price at a particular moment. They should not be confused with the company’s total assets or with the value of a single product. Microsoft was founded in 1975 and went public in 1986.
