SoftBank Group owns the semiconductor designer Arm after completing its acquisition in 2016.
SoftBank Group agreed to acquire Arm Holdings in 2016 and completed the transaction for about £24 billion. Arm designs processor architectures and licenses them to other companies rather than primarily manufacturing chips itself. Its designs are widely used in smartphones and other low-power devices.
Arm was later spun off from SoftBank and listed publicly in 2023, while SoftBank retained a controlling stake after the initial public offering. This history causes a common mix-up: SoftBank owns a major stake in Arm, but Arm is a separate publicly traded company. The earlier Nvidia acquisition proposal was abandoned in 2022.
