Amazon owns both the Amazon online marketplace and Amazon Web Services.
Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 as an online bookstore, and the company began operating from its website in 1995. It later expanded into numerous retail categories, logistics, digital media, devices, advertising, and subscription services. This diversification helped transform Amazon from a specialist bookseller into one of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization.
Amazon Web Services, commonly called AWS, began offering services in 2006. It provides on-demand computing, storage, databases, and other infrastructure tools to organizations worldwide. AWS is a separate operating segment within Amazon, not an independent public company. A common mix-up is confusing Amazon’s market capitalization with its sales: market cap measures the value assigned to its publicly traded shares, while revenue measures money generated by operations.
