Which company owns the Instagram photo- and video-sharing service?
Answer
Meta Platforms
Answer
Meta Platforms
Meta Platforms owns the Instagram photo- and video-sharing service.
Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched in October 2010. The service initially focused on square photographs, filters, and mobile sharing. Facebook announced an agreement to acquire Instagram in April 2012, and the deal closed later that year. Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms in 2021.
Instagram expanded from photographs into video, messaging, Stories, live broadcasts, and short-form Reels. It remains one of the major services in Meta’s family of applications, alongside Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
The acquisition is sometimes confused with Instagram’s original ownership. Instagram was independent when it launched and was acquired by Facebook before Facebook became Meta. Meta’s ownership is the relevant answer in present-day corporate terms, while Facebook is the historical name of the parent company that bought it.
