Amazon is the company founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 that owns the Amazon e-commerce platform.
Bezos incorporated the business in Washington state in July 1994, and it began as an online bookstore. Amazon expanded beyond books into general merchandise, logistics, digital media, devices, and cloud computing.
Amazon Web Services, or AWS, became a particularly important part of the company. It provides computing, storage, databases, and other internet infrastructure to businesses and public organizations worldwide. The company also operates Prime subscriptions, advertising services, and a large fulfillment network.
Amazon became one of the first companies outside the traditional technology hardware sector to reach a $1 trillion market capitalization, doing so in September 2018. Its market value reflects expectations about several businesses, not just online retail sales.
