Which company owns the Android operating system and acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012?

The story behind the answer

Google owns the Android operating system and acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012.

Google completed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility in May 2012 for approximately $12.5 billion. Motorola Mobility held a large portfolio of mobile-device patents, which were strategically important during the rapidly expanding smartphone market.

Google developed Android as an open-source mobile operating system used by many manufacturers. Android is separate from Google’s corporate parent, Alphabet, which was created in 2015 as a holding company for Google and other businesses.

Google later sold most of Motorola Mobility’s handset business to Lenovo in 2014, while retaining many patents. This history is why Google can be associated with Motorola without being the company that currently manufactures most Motorola-branded phones.
