Alphabet is the parent company that owns Google and became one of the world’s highest-valued public companies.
Alphabet was created in 2015 through a corporate restructuring that made Google its largest subsidiary. The reorganization separated Google’s core internet products from several other businesses and projects, giving the broader group a holding-company structure.
Google remains the main source of Alphabet’s business, especially online advertising connected to Search, YouTube, and partner websites. Alphabet also includes businesses and projects such as Google Cloud and Waymo, though their financial importance differs.
Alphabet is often confused with Google because Google is the better-known operating company and brand. Alphabet’s stock-market valuation applies to the parent company, whose publicly traded shares represent ownership across the group. Its shares trade under the symbols GOOGL and GOOG, which have different voting rights.
