Which company owns Google and adopted the name Alphabet in 2015?

The story behind the answer

Alphabet is the company that owns Google and adopted its corporate name in 2015.

Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced the restructuring in August 2015. Alphabet became the parent company, while Google continued operating its search, advertising, Android, YouTube, and cloud businesses as a major subsidiary. Page became Alphabet’s chief executive and Brin became its president at the launch.

The change separated Google’s core internet products from newer or more experimental businesses, including life-sciences and investment projects. In 2019, Sundar Pichai became Alphabet’s CEO after previously leading Google. A common mix-up is treating Alphabet and Google as interchangeable: Google is Alphabet’s best-known subsidiary, but Alphabet is the listed parent company.
