Which company operates the world's largest stock exchange by listed-company market capitalization, the NYSE?

The story behind the answer

Intercontinental Exchange operates the New York Stock Exchange, the world’s largest stock exchange by listed-company market capitalization.

Intercontinental Exchange, commonly called ICE, acquired NYSE Euronext in 2013. The transaction brought the New York Stock Exchange into ICE’s group and expanded ICE’s role across exchanges, clearing houses, data services, and financial technology.

The NYSE itself is an exchange venue, not a single publicly traded company whose market value equals the combined value of its listed businesses. Thousands of companies can be listed there, and their share values contribute to the exchange’s aggregate listed-company capitalization.

ICE is often confused with Nasdaq, Inc., which operates the Nasdaq Stock Market. Both are major exchange operators, but they are separate companies with different networks, indexes, and listed businesses.
