Meta Platforms operates Facebook and changed its corporate name from Facebook, Inc. in 2021.
Facebook, Inc. announced the name Meta Platforms on October 28, 2021, and began trading under the stock symbol META in June 2022. The change reflected chief executive Mark Zuckerberg’s emphasis on building the metaverse, a broad concept involving immersive virtual and augmented-reality experiences.
Facebook remained the name of the social-networking service, while Meta Platforms became the parent company. The company’s other major products include Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Its Family of Apps business has historically generated most of its revenue, especially through digital advertising.
The rebrand is often confused with a renaming of Facebook itself. Facebook continued as a separate product under the Meta corporate umbrella. Meta also owns Reality Labs, the division responsible for virtual-reality hardware and related technologies.
