Tencent operates WeChat and is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 700.
Tencent launched WeChat in 2011. The mobile platform grew from messaging into a broad ecosystem that includes social communication, payments, mini-programs, content, and other digital services. In mainland China, WeChat is known as Weixin, while WeChat is the international brand name.
Tencent was founded in 1998 by Ma Huateng, also known as Pony Ma, and several co-founders. The company first became widely known for QQ, an instant-messaging service, and later expanded into online games, digital content, advertising, and financial technology.
Tencent's Hong Kong listing is distinct from the U.S.-traded American depositary receipts that some international investors use. Its market capitalization is therefore quoted in Hong Kong dollars on its primary exchange, and comparisons with U.S.-listed companies require currency conversion.
