Sony Group operates the PlayStation video-game business as a subsidiary.
Sony’s gaming operations are conducted mainly through Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company behind the PlayStation consoles, software, online services, and accessories. Sony Interactive Entertainment was formed in 2016 through the merger of Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International.
The first PlayStation launched in Japan in 1994, establishing Sony as a major force in the console industry. Later systems included the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The business also publishes games through PlayStation Studios and operates the PlayStation Network.
Sony Group is a diversified company with businesses in games, music, movies, electronics, imaging, and financial services. Sony Interactive Entertainment is therefore not the same legal entity as Sony Group, although it is a major subsidiary. The company changed its corporate name from Sony Corporation to Sony Group Corporation in 2021.
