Alphabet operates the Google Search engine and trades on Nasdaq under the symbol GOOGL.
Alphabet Inc. became Google’s parent company in 2015 after a corporate restructuring. Google remains the largest operating company within the group and includes Search, YouTube, Android, advertising, and cloud businesses, while Alphabet also oversees other ventures and “Other Bets.”
Alphabet has two major publicly traded share classes associated with the symbols GOOGL and GOOG. GOOGL shares carry voting rights, while GOOG shares generally do not; the difference is a corporate-governance distinction rather than two separate companies.
The restructuring allowed Google’s core operations and experimental businesses to be reported more clearly. Alphabet’s market capitalization therefore reflects the combined value of Google and its wider collection of businesses, not the Search engine alone.
