Which company operates the Dow Jones Industrial Average stock-market index?

The story behind the answer

S&P Dow Jones Indices operates the Dow Jones Industrial Average stock-market index.

S&P Dow Jones Indices is a joint venture responsible for producing and maintaining many financial benchmarks, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the S&P 500, and the Dow Jones Transportation Average. The Dow is one of the best-known measures of U.S. stock-market performance.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was created in 1896 by Charles Dow and originally contained 12 companies. It later expanded to 30 large, established U.S. companies. Unlike a market-capitalization-weighted index, the Dow is price-weighted, so companies with higher share prices have greater influence.

The index is often casually called “the Dow Jones,” but Dow Jones is also the name of a financial-information company. S&P Dow Jones Indices is the specific index administrator and a joint venture involving S&P Global, CME Group, and News Corp.
