Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, a market-capitalization leader, pioneered which business model for making chips for other companies?
Answer
Dedicated semiconductor foundry
Answer
Dedicated semiconductor foundry
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company pioneered the dedicated semiconductor foundry business model. Instead of designing and selling its own branded chips, TSMC manufactures integrated circuits designed by other companies.
Morris Chang founded TSMC in Taiwan in 1987 with support from the Taiwanese government and Philips. The model allowed “fabless” semiconductor companies to concentrate on chip architecture and design without building and operating their own extremely expensive fabrication plants.
This separation changed the structure of the semiconductor industry. Companies such as Nvidia, Qualcomm, and MediaTek can design processors and other chips while relying on foundries for physical production. TSMC serves many customers, but it generally does not compete with them by selling a competing branded chip portfolio.
The term “foundry” can cause confusion because it refers to manufacturing services, not a mining or metalworking business. TSMC also operates its own research and development programs, yet its defining commercial role remains contract manufacturing for chip designers.
