Which company manufactures Pentium chipsets?

The story behind the answer

Intel manufactures Pentium chipsets and processors.

Pentium is a family of x86-compatible microprocessors created and produced by Intel. The original Pentium launched on March 22, 1993, as the successor to Intel’s 486 line. It was internally known as the P5 and represented Intel’s fifth-generation x86 design.

The name was chosen partly because “pent-” suggests five, while “-ium” resembles the names of chemical elements. Intel used the brand for many generations, including Pentium MMX, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4, Pentium M, and later Pentium Gold and Pentium Silver products.

Pentium is sometimes confused with a separate chipset brand or with AMD processors, but it is an Intel product line. The brand moved from flagship status to the budget and entry-level market after Intel introduced Core processors in 2006. Intel retired the Pentium and Celeron names for new low-end products in 2023, replacing them with the simpler Intel Processor branding.
