TSMC manufactures advanced logic chips for firms such as Apple and Nvidia in Taiwan.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company was founded in 1987 by Morris Chang. Its major innovation was the dedicated foundry model: TSMC manufactures chips designed by other companies instead of primarily selling chips under its own consumer brand.
This separation allows companies such as Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm to concentrate on chip design while using TSMC’s fabrication plants. TSMC produces processors for smartphones, data centers, graphics, automobiles, and other applications.
The company is sometimes confused with a chip designer. TSMC is chiefly a contract manufacturer, while Nvidia and Qualcomm are widely known for designing chips without operating the same kind of large-scale manufacturing network. TSMC’s importance has made Taiwan central to discussions about semiconductor supply chains and technology security.
